SYMPTOMS / COMPLAINT;
Code 740
Overheated converter
CAUSE;
The main pressure regulator valve allows limited fluid to flow to the converter and cooler
The limited flow of charge oil crossing in front of the TCC piston allows the clutch to drag, creating the overheat condition.
CORRECTION;
Installing the Sonnax converter charge regulated pressure regulator valve will allow more fluid flow into the converter and cooler circuit.
This will help maintain a proper converter operating temperature.
The check-ball inside the valve ensures converter fluid will not drain back when the vehicle is shut off.
SONNAX PRODUCT SUMMARY;
Honda/Acura models equipped with a four- or five-speed automatic transmission may overheat the converter. Insufficient flow to the TCC release circuit at low RPM allows the lockup piston to drag on the cover, generating heat (see Figure 2). This heat glazes the TCC lining and overheats the fluid. Eventually the slip rate cannot be controlled due to lining failure, resulting in code P0740. To prevent this problem, Sonnax offers a drop-in converter charge regulated pressure regulator valve 98892-04K. This valve allows more flow to the converter and cooler circuits (see Figure 3), increasing converter charge during low pump output conditions, and includes an internal check-ball to prevent converter drain back when the vehicle is off. The same valve design will assist converter charge and TCC apply pressure during low-output/high-load demand situations.
Make sure to inspect and replace lockup control valve end-plugs with Sonnax O-ringed end plug kit 98892-01K to help ensure maximum TCC apply pressure.

This kit fits various Honda 4/5 speed models. However, model to model, the appearance of valve bodies and the location of the pressure regulator valve bore may vary. The MAXA 98-02, 2.3L Accord model is illustrated here.~This kit fits 4/5 speed Honda/Acuras except: A6VA, AOYA, BOYA, MPOA, MPJA, APXA, MPXA, MP1A, PX4B, MPRA, RO, MPZA, M5HA, M1WA, M5DA, MPWA, MPYA.~This product will NOT correct a worn valve or pump body. It is recommended that pressure regulator bore wear, pump gear clearances and end plug leakage be checked prior to installation for best results. Use oversized kit Sonnax / CT # 98892-13K if restoring a worn valve or pump body.
